Judith Lee Midgley Kirkendall, Ph.D., 84, of Hilo died July 25 at home. Born in Salt Lake City, she was a historian and anthropologist, dean at the University of Hawaii at Hilo, managed the Peace Corps’ resources in exotic languages and was staff for volunteers teaching in Southeast Asia, the Middle East and Africa, and a Big Island training officer. She founded the International Institute and Language Bank, wrote “Hawaiian Ethnogastronomy” and was awarded Woman of the Year.
